An American man has proposed to his girlfriend by hacking into her favourite video game.
Bernie Peng (26), a blogger and financial software programmer from New Jersey, spent a month altering the code of Tammy Li's copy of Bejeweled - a game which has sold more that ten million copies worldwide.
Having successfully reprogrammed the game's code on the Nintendo DS console, Bernie arranged that the screen would go clear and a digital pink sapphire ring would drop down when Tammy reached a certain score.
"I thought it was pretty cool, in a nerdy way," Bernie told The Star-Ledger newspaper of Newark.
Tammy accepted and is now wearing an identical pink sapphire engagement ring.
Garth Chouteau, a spokesman for PopCap, the Seattle company that makes Bejeweled, said: "Most video game companies would frown on people manipulating their games.
"But it won him a woman. As a bunch of geeks we have to say, 'Bernie, hats off to you'."
