A woman who was told that she had less than a year to live has overcome adversity to win a £50,000 wedding in a magazine competition.
Courtney Dempsey (33) from Tampa, Florida was diagnosed with late-stage melanoma four years ago.
However she began dating 37-year-old Gary Courtney and after successful treatment, the couple's moving story allowed them to beat off competition from 40,000 others and win the competition with US Weekly magazine, which includes a dress and a honeymoon.
In her contest entry, Courtney described her ordeal and said: "Most men would run, but he is one in a million."
On learning the news, the delighted couple said: "We're beyond thrilled. We're actually in a state of shock right now."
As far as her surname is concerned, the bride said that she would still be choosing the traditional option of taking her husband's, even though she will be called Courtney Courtney.
"I love it. I'm in sales. No one will ever forget my name," she laughed.
