Traditional sex roles have evolved dramatically in recent years, so couples who live together need to talk about who does what, a dating expert has said.
Martha Beck says that both men and women learn how to cook, wash, clean, drive and generally be independent in the 21st century.
This can create problems with stepping on the other person's toes when a couple chooses to co-habit.
Therefore it is a good idea to take the time to discuss the division of chores and duties at the start of a relationship, Ms Beck advises.
She says: "In our culture, traditional divisions between 'what men should do' and 'what women should do' have been destabilised by massive ideological and economic trends, creating domestic conflicts in the process.
"Figuring out who tackles which role may take a lot of start-up time, but believe me, it can save you enormous long-term conflict."
