    Hollywood movie star Tom Cruise is trying to bond with his father-in-law by taking a more persistent interest in golf, it has been revealed.

    A report from America's Star Magazine has revealed that Cruise is encouraging his wife Katie Holmes to take up the sport and bring her dad along with her.

    It has been rumoured that Holmes' father has been slow to warm to the star of Top Gun and Rain Man who first began dating the actress - who is 16 years his junior - in 2005.

    However, being one of the world's richest and most recognisable big-screen stars, Cruise has spent over a hundred thousand dollars to get his wife and her father on to the golf course with the aim of impressing the in-laws.

    In 2006, Cruise was ranked by Forbes magazine as the most powerful celebrity in the world and his marriage to former Dawson Creek and Batman Begins star Holmes is his third.
