A new study has shown that equal levels of commitment, devotion and security are demonstrated by both same-sex and heterosexual couples.
Researchers from the University of Illinois looked into the quality of adult romantic relationships and healthy development.
The findings disproved assumptions that same-sex couples are not as committed to their relationships as straight people.
Both gay and straight couples who were engaged in relationships displayed similar character traits.
All expressed positive views about their relationships but those who were in the more committed relationships were found to resolve conflicts with their partners better.
Committed couples were also found to work more harmoniously when they were assigned laboratory tasks.
Evidence from the research, which is published in the January issue of Developmental Psychology, also found that positive interactions between couples improve the quality of relationships in ways that foster healthy adult development.
