Flashy sports cars impress men's mates but not their dates, new research suggests.
According to findings from car insurer LV=, when asked which car would impress a date, the majority of men raced to place the Ferrari at the top of their list, while only nine per cent of women would actually be impressed by the fast car.
Men are being advised that less is more where cars are concerned, with most women preferring a classy yet understated car such as a Mercedes or a BMW.
The research also found that the age of chivalry lives on for many men, with 16 per cent of respondents affirming that they would always want to pick up their date.
However, today's independent women do not seem to concur, as 96 per cent said that they had no qualms in collecting their male counterparts when going on a date.
Martin Milliner at LV= said: "What impresses your mates may not impress your date, and our survey shows that pulling up in a smart car with a touch of luxury will flick more of the right switches than a flame-red two-seater.
"Dating experts warn that women look for signs of stability rather than risk-taking from a partner, so even those who don't have a flashy sports car should keep in mind that safe driving is likely to make a stronger first impression than boy-racing."
