    Former Pop Idol runner-up Gareth Gates has announced that he is engaged to marry his long-term girlfriend.

    The cute singer, who scored number one hits with singles Spirit In The Sky and Anyone of Us (Stupid Mistake), proposed to his dancer love Suzanne Mole on New Year's Eve.

    Gareth wowed audiences when he appeared on the talent competition in 2002 by managing to overcome his stammer to reveal a powerful singing voice.

    The Bradford-born singer (23) has been dating Suzanne (32) for five years and he says he cannot wait to marry her.

    "After a great Christmas, I proposed to Suzanne on New Year's Eve and she said yes," he gushed.

    "We are both extremely happy and look forward to planning our wedding and life together."
