Modern newlyweds are making the most of their honeymoons as a chance to spoil themselves and they are spending an average of £1,000 more than couples did 20 years ago, according to research.
A poll of 2,000 married Brits found that 90 per cent of 80s honeymooners believe that the post-wedding break has become more lavish and extravagant than ever.
They're not wrong, as 67 per cent of modern newlyweds choose to go abroad to find romance after their wedding, compared to just a quarter of couples in the 80s, while a lucky 20 per cent of today's couples visit more than two foreign countries on honeymoon.
Mike Pickard, Head of esure travel insurance, which carried out the poll, said: "It's interesting to see how trends have changed over the years.
"With the rise in the number of people cohabiting before they get married nowadays, the honeymoon is seen as a much bigger deal, as it offers the chance to have a dream holiday before couples can truly settle down to married life."
