More than half of Brits believe that the man should pick up the bill when a couple goes on a first date, new research reveals.
Despite living in the age of equality, some 54 per cent of those questioned by private bank Cater Allen said that men should pay on the first date.
However a large proportion of respondents (46 per cent) said that they preferred to "go Dutch" and split the bill equally, while a stingy 19 per cent said that they would pull out a calculator to make sure they did not pay a penny more than they owed.
In terms of long-term relationships, 76 per cent of those asked said that couples should have a joint bank account, but 32 per cent said that couples should be co-habiting for at least a year before opening one.
Sally Ann Watts, head of marketing at Cater Allen, said: "With over 44 per cent of couples arguing over the issue of finance, communication and setting simple ground rules and boundaries early on can help avoid pitfalls later in a relationship. Communication is the key."
