Marriage is more popular than ever before with young people in the UK, a new poll has revealed.
Some 70 per cent of Brits aged between 20 and 35 hope to get married in the near future, according to the Ipsos Mori survey carried out on behalf of social policy think tank Civitas.
A further 79 per cent of couples currently living together plan to wed, with 47 per cent of all those quizzed saying that they want to get married to show their partner a solid commitment.
In contrast just one per cent of people said they think marriage can cause problems in a household by jeopardising equality between husband and wife.
Anastasia de Waal, author of the report and head of family and education at Civitas, explained that people "want" to get married rather than feeling that they "have" to get married.
"In a time when you don't have to get married, when it's perfectly socially acceptable to cohabit without being married, people are actually choosing it," she told the BBC.
