Mel B: 'My husband's not a psycho!'

  Spice Girl Mel B has spoken out in public to deny claims that her new husband is a wife-beater.
  
  Mel, who secretly married Stephen Belafonte just two months ago, is devastated by claims that her film-producer hubby used to beat up his ex, Nicole Contreras.
  
  "Everything I stand for is about being a strong, independent woman, so for him to be seen as a wife beater is devastating for me because he's not - he never has been," 32-year old Mel told Hello! magazine.
  
  Belafonte faces battery charges against his common-law ex-wife, but Mel is adamant that her new husband is no head-case.
  
  "My friends and family read this and go into shock-horror mode, thinking, 'Oh, she's married a psychopath!'," the Spice Girl said.
  
  But Mel sees Belafonte as a changed man who made her believe in love again after her break up with US comedian Eddie Murphy.
  
  "He melted my heart...but I'd been so so hurt," she told the Daily Mail.
  
  "I wanted to make sure that this guy was gentle enough to have me believe again that it is possible."
