Men who speak with a low, gravely voice are likely to have more children than their higher-voiced counterparts, according to startling new scientific research.
The study, published in Biology Letters, found that women who are reproductively-minded are more likely to opt for men with a deep voice and therefore mate selection favours these men.
Women perceive deep voices to be more dominant, older, healthier and more masculine sounding, and are therefore attracted to them.
David Feinberg, assistant professor in the Department of Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour at McMaster University, who led the research, commented: "We find that men with low voice pitch have higher reproductive success and more children born to them."
"If our ancestors went through a similar process this could be one reason why men's and women's voices sound different."
