The number of couples who got divorced in 2006 was lower than it has been in 29 years, official government figures reveal.
Some 132,562 couples filed for divorce in 2006.
The total number of divorces fell by 6.5 per cent from 2005 to 132,562 - the lowest number since 1977 when there were 129,053.
As well as more people working at their marriages and people becoming more cautious before taking the plunge by opting to live together first, it is thought that high profile divorce cases such as that between Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills are putting people off splitting up.
The Church of England has hailed the figures as being "very encouraging".
Denise Knowles, counselor for relationship campaigners Relate, said: "It's really, really good news and suggests that people are recognising the importance and value of a good family life to their physical and mental health."
Statistics say that love is in the air, so why not search for your perfect date!
