New research suggests that internet dating can not only lead to love, but in most cases helps users to develop their social circle.
Researchers in Australia examined statistics from more than 60 online dating sites and found that the phenomenon is gradually changing the entire nature of socialising.
Many users said that they found internet dating to be an informal and effective way of meeting people.
They noted that the personal profile is considered to be particularly important as it acts as a kind of personal "shop window" to other users.
The nature of the communication between participants was also found to be revealing as it is often more free-flowing and deep than face-to-face conversation.
Lead researcher Dr Millsom Henry-Waring of Melbourne University commented: "We have suggested that a type of hyper-communication occurs in the types of communication and also in the speed and intensity of the contact.
"As found in other studies, this appears to be facilitated by the informal and dis-inhibitive nature of the medium."
