British Asian singles who may have been set up for an arranged marriage are finding an unlikely matchmaking device in online dating, according to new studies.
Hundreds of thousands of British Muslims and Hindus are browsing internet dating sites every day in the hope of finding someone to suit them.
Dating experts suggest that this popularity is because online dating sites allow young people the freedom to choose their own life partners while still selecting from their own racial and religious backgrounds.
"They let you design the perfect partner," Denise Knowles, a counsellor from Relate, told the Times.
"It's a way of meeting people, and you don't have to continue if it doesn't work out; that's what's different from strictly arranged marriages."
Experts say that dating websites are the perfect way to meet people who match your criteria, because circumstances and time pressures can sometimes mean that singles are not able to meet such people in social scenarios.
