    Spanish sweethearts Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem are said to have become engaged, according to reports.

    Javier, who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar earlier this year for his stunning performance in No Country for Old Men, has been friends with Penelope for years, but the pair only began dating relatively recently when they starred in the forthcoming Woody Allen movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona together.

    However, Javier is said to be so smitten with the Mediterranean beauty that he proposed during a romantic holiday in France, reports the National Enquirer.

    According to sources, Javier faced a certain amount of pressure from his mother Pilar to pop the question, who is rumoured to be a huge fan of Penelope.

    A friend of the couple said: "Pilar took her son aside and told him, 'What's the matter with you? She's perfect! You love her, she loves you. Get married.'"
