According to scientists, short but slim women with long legs and large busts are the most attractive to men because they have low 'body masculinity'.
Women such as Marilyn Monroe and Scarlett Johansson are therefore ideal specimens of femininity, the study found.
Meanwhile women are likely to go for virtually the opposite shape - men with a long upper body and broad shoulders but short legs.
Therefore men like Christian Bale and Clive Owen are likely to fair well with the opposite sex.
Dr William Brown, of Brunel University, which carried out the study, said: "We found that shorter, slimmer females with long slender limbs and larger breasts are more attractive."
Dr Brown and his researchers came to their conclusions by asking a team of volunteers to rate the body shapes of 77 people minus their heads.
The research also revealed that symmetry is important to both men and women, as the most symmetrical bodies are likely to be the most attractive.
