Many people must have wondered what supermodel Kate Moss ever saw in grubby rocker Pete Doherty or just why stunning Sienna Miller has reportedly accepted the proposal of scruffy Rhys Ifans, but according to new research they were playing their cards right.
Beautiful girls should go for men who are uglier than them in order to ensure a happy marriage, according to a psychological study conducted by researchers at the University of Tennessee.
Scientists rated 82 couples on their looks before talking to them about their relationship problems.
It was discovered that men who were more attractive than their partners were likely to be more unhappy dealing with married life than men whose wives were prettier.
Study leader Professor Jim McNulty said: "Men who were more attractive than their partner had a tendency to offer less emotional and practical support to their wives.
"Attractive men have available to them more short-term mating opportunities. This may make them less satisfied and less committed to the marital relationship."
