Why humour works

  When women are asked to name the top five attributes they are looking for in a partner, most of them will cite a good sense of humour, but just why are funny guys so attractive?
  
  Humour expert John Morreall, a professor at the College of William and Mary in Virginia, told the Seattle Times: "If you think of any social relationship, shared laughter is one of the markers of success."
  
  Women automatically feel happy when they laugh a lot on a date, which gives them the impression that a relationship with a funny date will be filled with happiness.
  
  And humour works wonders with online dating too, as humour often commands attention.
  
  Janet Siroto a spokeswoman for Match.com said that humour can often help people on a date to move past superficial topics of conversation.
  
  "It speaks to tastes, a person's pop-culture references or lack thereof," she explained.
