  Wayne Bridge has turned down the opportunity to play for the England squad in the upcoming World Cup in South Africa, claiming that his “position in the squad is now untenable and potentially divisive”.

  The decision comes after Chelsea player John Terry allegedly cheated on Bridge’s wife, Toni Poole, with Bridge’s ex fiancé and mother of his 3-year old son, Vanessa Perroncel. The news of the affair broke a few weeks ago, when it emerged that Terry had reportedly tried to help fix Bridge and Perroncel’s relationship, but comfort quickly turned into a four-month relationship. The claims coincide with rumours that Vanessa is obsessed with footballers and goes out of her way to date them. However her publicist, Max Clifford, announced that she won’t be selling her story; John Terry has reportedly offered her over £750,000 to keep quiet. Reports suggest that while Vanessa is keen to rekindle her relationship with Wayne, he is not ready to forgive her and is expected to argue that he should provide less money for child support due to her infidelity and apparent lump sum from Terry.

  Terry was recently stripped of his ‘Captain’ title by Fabio Capello as a result of the affair; the armband has now been given to Rio Ferdinand. Fans at Chelsea supported the defender by chanting “there’s only one England captain” while Terry applauded and blew kisses to the fans with gratitude.

  On hearing the news about the rumoured affair, Terry’s wife Toni fled to Dubai with her twin children, parents and friends. Terry was given time off work to travel to Dubai to be with his family; the couple put on numerous displays of affection to show that they were not letting the situation get in the way of their relationship and family. They are said to be moving forward after the allegations and it’s suggested that they may even try for another child.

  John Terry and Wayne Bridge are expected to meet at Stamford Bridge tomorrow to play for their respective teams, Chelsea and Manchester City. It is still unclear whether Bridge will agree to shake hands with former friend and teammate Terry.
