  Kate Winslet to split from Sam

  Kate Winslet and her director husband, Sam Mendes, announced their split yesterday claiming it is “amicable and is by mutual agreement”.

  The couple met in 2001 at a party thrown by actress Emma Thompson, and married in 2003 in Anguilla when Kate was pregnant with son Joe. Kate and Sam were considered by many to be one of Hollywood’s strongest couples, but after rumoured months of rows, the couple decided earlier this year to go their separate ways after nearly 7 years of marriage.

  Kate, who was briefly married to cameraman Jim Threapleton, father of her daughter Mia, has fled to Mexico for a holiday with her two children; Sam is reportedly staying in New York.

  Last year Winslet and Mendes worked together on the highly-acclaimed film ‘Revolutionary Road’; Kate co-starred with Leonardo Dicaprio and claimed it was often awkward to film sex scenes in front of director/husband Sam. Rumours are circulating as to whether the couple’s decision to work together caused the rift that eventually drove them apart.

  Winslet forgot to thank her husband when she won a BAFTA last year for her performance in ‘The Reader’, and although she made up for it at the Oscars, many saw this as a sign of bad things to come. At this year’s Oscars, Kate walked the red carpet alone, saying that Mendes was at home ‘babysitting’.

  After last year’s award season, Kate took a year break from her career in order to spend time with her family, whereas Sam, who previously had long relationships with Rachel Weisz and Calista Flockhart, continued to work hard. The couple have not been pictured together since last summer at Wimbledon.

  Now that the news of their split has emerged, a divorce is imminent; the couple reportedly want to avoid a bitter divorce battle over their estimated £30million joint fortune.
